The Tale of Two Kingdoms and Buddha’s Message of Peace
Long ago, on either side of the holy River Ganga, there lived two powerful kingdoms — Vatsa and Magadha. The river flowed gracefully between them, nourishing their lands, making the soil rich and green. Crops grew in abundance, people lived happily, and both kingdoms worshipped the river as their Mother Ganga, offering prayers with deep respect and devotion.
But over time, the peace between the kingdoms began to fade. The kings of Vatsa and Magadha, once satisfied with what they had, grew selfish. Each of them wanted complete control over the Ganga River. Their greed blinded them, and they began preparing for war — not realizing that the very river which gave them life could soon become the reason for death and destruction.
Just as the two armies stood ready for battle, Lord Buddha arrived at the scene. Calm and composed, he looked at the gathering of soldiers and the tense faces of the kings.
He spoke gently but firmly,
“River water is indeed precious, but not more precious than human life. You are ready to shed blood for something that was meant to give life.
If you try to defeat hatred with more hatred, only anger and jealousy will remain.
War destroys peace, ruins lives, and leaves behind sorrow.
Nature is a gift, not a curse. When it is shared fairly, everyone can live in happiness.”
Buddha’s words touched the hearts of both kings. Their eyes opened to the truth — they had let their greed and ego cloud their judgment. Realizing their mistake, the kings of Vatsa and Magadha dropped their weapons, called off the war, and chose to live in peace once again.
From that day on, the river Ganga continued to bless both kingdoms equally, and the people lived together in harmony, remembering the wisdom of the Buddha.

- True strength lies in compassion and wisdom.
