Yana has a famous mythological story connected to Lord Shiva and the demon Bhasmasura. According to legend, Bhasmasura received a boon from Lord Shiva that anyone whose head he touched would turn to ashes. Misusing this power, Bhasmasura tried to destroy the world and even attempted to use it on Shiva himself.
To save creation, Lord Vishnu took the enchanting form of Mohini and tricked Bhasmasura into placing his hand on his own head, turning him into ashes. It is believed that the ashes of Bhasmasura formed the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara, while the form of Mohini is represented by the Mohini Shikhara at Yana. Because of this legend, Yana is considered a sacred place, and the Bhairaveshwara Temple at its base is worshipped with great devotion.
