M. Chidananda Murthy was a highly respected Kannada writer, researcher, and historian. As a prominent scholar in Karnataka, he specialized deeply in the history of the Kannada language and ancient Karnataka.
He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Mysore University, where he was influenced by renowned literary figures like Kuvempu. He later obtained his PhD from Bangalore University in 1964, focusing on a cultural study of Kannada inscriptions, and eventually served as the head of its Kannada department.
Murthy was widely recognized for his scientific and socio-cultural contextualization of historical inscriptions. Beyond his academic research, he was a passionate activist who spearheaded successful campaigns to protect and conserve the historical monuments at Hampi and fought to secure classical language status for the Kannada language.
