Salim Ali, famously called the “Birdman of India,” was born in 1896 in Mumbai to Moizuddin and Zeenat-un-Nissa. After losing his parents early, he was lovingly brought up by his uncle and aunt, who nurtured his fascination for wildlife. His deep interest in birds inspired him to pursue zoology at St. Xavier’s College and obtain advanced ornithology training in Germany. Working with the Bombay Natural History Society, he conducted extensive bird surveys across India. His influential books and scientific studies reshaped modern ornithology in the country. For his outstanding contributions, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
